Three-phase autotransformers

Three-phase autotransformers are often used as step-up or step-down transformers for higher power installations that do not require galvanic isolation.

Important reminder: The essential characteristic that distinguishes them from transformers is the absence of galvanic isolation between the input and output of the autotransformer. However, it is a reliable and cost-effective solution for adjusting a voltage, even at high power and current levels. They can also provide a way to create a neutral point at lower cost when required. Please keep in mind, however, that they are not isolating, and therefore cannot be used to change the neutral earthing system.

Depending on the environment where the three-phase autotransformer will be installed, the appropriate protection rating must be selected. If the autotransformer is installed in a secure cabinet, an IP00 (bare) protection rating is sufficient, and no enclosure is required. In a technical room, a minimum IP21 protective enclosure is required to protect people. In environments subject to water splashes, a higher protection rating such as IP54 should be considered.
