The 6 mistakes to avoid when installing an electrical transformer

Guides & Advice , Transformer

Installing an electrical transformer requires rigor, expertise and attention to detail. Even a minor error can have significant consequences for the safety, reliability or lifespan of the installation. Here are the six most common mistakes to avoid when installing an electrical transformer.

Neglecting the installation environment

A transformer should be installed in a clean, well-ventilated, and dry environment. Insufficient ventilation can cause overheating, reducing the performance and lifespan of the transformer. Excessive humidity or the presence of dust can damage the insulation or cause short circuits. It is therefore essential to choose a suitable room and to respect the manufacturer's recommendations in terms of the environment.

Forgetting to validate electrical protections

The choice of electrical protection must be consistent with the power of the transformer and its inrush current. Upstream, a D-curve circuit breaker is often required to support the interlocking current. Downstream, a C-curve may be more appropriate. Sizing these protections incorrectly means exposing yourself to untimely tripping or, worse, to a lack of protection in the event of an overload or short circuit.

Not checking the network voltage

Using the wrong cables or crimps

The use of cables with insufficient cross-section or poorly crimped connections is a common mistake with serious consequences: heating, voltage losses, or even fires. It is imperative to correctly size the conductors according to the expected current, and to make clean, solid connections that comply with current standards.

Omitting grounding

Grounding the transformer is a fundamental element to guarantee the safety of people and the protection of equipment. Its absence can lead to serious electrical risks in the event of a lack of insulation. It is therefore essential to provide a compliant and controlled connection to the Earth.

Do not tighten the terminals before commissioning

Before powering the transformer, all connections must be checked and tightened. With vibration, loose connections can cause localized heating, damage terminals, and even create arcing. A simple mechanical check can prevent serious malfunctions.
