The high-voltage, high-frequency transformer is used in industrial equipment that requires a voltage boost at a frequency suitable for its operation. In particular, it can be integrated into a generator designed for corona treatment.
When selecting this component, the output voltage alone is not enough: you must also consider the power supply, the load, and integration constraints. Here are the points to consider when planning your project.
What is a high-voltage, high-frequency transformer used for?
A step-up transformer produces a voltage at the secondary winding that is higher than the voltage applied to the primary winding. In a high-frequency system, it operates with a suitable power supply circuit.
It is part of the electrical conversion system. Its specifications must therefore be defined in accordance with the other components of the generator and the end application.
The specifications must specify, in particular, the target voltage, the power to be transmitted, the operating frequency, and the operating conditions. A comprehensive analysis of these factors allows for the selection of a design tailored to the equipment’s actual needs.

What is its role in a corona generator?
Corona treatment uses an electrical discharge to alter the surface properties of a material. In a treatment system, a high-voltage, high-frequency power supply provides the energy required for this discharge.
The transformer helps boost the voltage within the generator. Its design must be compatible with the electronics that control it and with the processing station.
A common application is the pretreatment of plastic films prior to printing, coating, or lamination. The treatment increases their surface energy, thereby promoting the wetting and adhesion of inks, coatings, or adhesives.

What information do you need to provide to determine the proper size of your transformer?
To prepare a request for a study, gather the known specifications of your equipment:
- Primary power supply: voltage, frequency, and waveform.
- Expected output: desired voltage (specifying whether it is a peak or RMS value) and desired current.
- Operation: power, continuous or intermittent use, and load characteristics.
- Installation: available sizes, mounting, and connections.
- Environment: temperature, cooling, and insulation requirements.
Thermal constraints are among the parameters that need to be considered. Our article on heating and insulation classes of transformers presents useful concepts to help you better understand them.
Also indicate the points that still need to be defined. This distinction provides a clear basis for technical discussions, without confusing confirmed requirements with design assumptions.
Why Consider a Custom Project?
A transformer should not be selected based solely on its turns ratio. At high frequencies, leakage inductance and parasitic capacitance also affect its behavior.
Custom transformer design allows us to take into account the specific requirements of your equipment right from the component design phase.
