IP rating: an essential pillar for the safety of electrical transformers

Safety

When it comes to electrical transformers, design quality and technical performance are only part of the equation. Long-term safety and reliability also depend – and above all – on their ability to withstand external aggressions. At Le Cosinus, a French manufacturerof transformers for more than 40 years, we know how much the installation environment impacts the lifespan and proper functioning of this essential equipment. That's why we systematically integrate IP protection into the design of our products.

What is IP rating?

The IP protection class defined by the IEC 60529 standard, indicates the level of protection of an electrical box against the ingress of solid objects (such as dust) and liquids (such as water). It consists of two numbers:

  • First digit: protection against solids (from 0 to 6).
  • Second digit: protection against liquids (from 0 to 9).

For example

  • An IP44 protects against solid objects larger than 1 mm and splashing water.
  • An IP65 guarantees almost total dust tightness and protection against powerful water jets.

Why is the IP rating so important for a transformer?

A transformer is a sensitive piece of equipment, often placed in exposed environments (basements, technical rooms, workshops, construction sites, etc.). Without a suitable IP rating, several risks can compromise its operation:

  • Dust can accumulate and interfere with ventilation, causing the electrical transformer to overheat.
  • Moisture and water can cause short circuits, oxidation, and electrical connection issues in connectivity. Very high humidity can even cause electrical insulation problems.
  • Mechanical shocks can damage windings or insulators and thus cause dangerous short circuits.

Choosing the right IP rating means preventing these dangers from the design, installation or purchase phase.

What level of protection should you choose depending on the environment?

Each type of installation has its own constraints. Here are some typical recommendations:

  • In an electrical cabinet: IP00 or IP20 ratings are used. Electrical cabinets generally take over the protection of equipment and people
  • In a typical industrial workshop: IP21, IP23 or IP33 ratings are used to protect against shocks and protect people from electrical hazards.
  • In a particularly dusty workshop or for outdoor installation, higher IP ratings such as IP54 can be used to prevent dirt from dust or very heavy rain
  • Pour des applications immergées, il faut alors des coffrets en inox avec des indice IP très élevé type IP66.

At Le Cosinus, each transformer is designed with its operating environment in mind. It should be noted that for some IP ratings, such as IP54 and IP55, transformers with very low losses and oversized enclosures require sufficient cooling.

A collective security issue

The IP rating is not only of interest to engineers or manufacturers. It is an essential reference point for:

  • Design offices: to specifyequipment that complies with safety requirements.
  • Installers: to choose the right product according to the conditions of the site.
  • Maintenance managers: to anticipate the risks of wear and tear related to ageing.
  • End users: to ensure a reliable, durable and safe installation.
  • Inspection bodies: to validate the conformity of electrical installations.

At Le Cosinus, we don't just deliver three-phase or single-phase transformers. We deliver reliable, secure and compliant solutions. The IP index is at the heart of our quality approach and our environmental responsibility. Each transformer is built to last, withstand and adapt to your specific constraints.

In short

The IP rating is much more than a code on a data sheet: it is an assurance of safety and performance for any electrical transformer. Anticipating installation conditions, adapting the protective envelope, complying with standards, etc. All of these actions extend the life of your equipment and protect your facilities and the surrounding people.
